A new disease, gingrivitis, or "foot-in-mouth disease" was recently diagnosed in November 1994.
SYMPTOMS: Swollen gums, swollen neck veins, swollen head, incoherent speech, sometimes with foaming at the mouth.
TRANSMISSION: At this time, it is not known by what method or route gingrivitis is spread.
SUSCEPTIBILITY: Tends to infect high-strung public figures such as right-wing politicians, moral crusaders, and "talk radio" hosts.
GEOGRAPHIC AREA AFFECTED: Currently, gingrivitis is apparently isolated in the Washington, D.C./Beltway area. Quarantine of the afflicted is being studied.
TREATMENT: There is no specific treatment for gingrivitis at this time other than complete rest; retirement from public life and public speaking are highly recommended. Severe cases may be treated by the application of cyanoacrylate* on the lips, as indicated below.
